Sadia is a human rights activist working in the field of sexual violence as a consultant on honour-based violence, forced marriage and FGM. Based in the UK, she has a focus on black minority ethnic women. Sadia organised a hugely successful event titled ‘Let’s Talk Honour’ in October 2016, which was held at Gloucester University. She also launched Critical Sisters, a forum to debate, discuss and challenge anti-feminist norms, including religious norms. She talks about the importance of speaking out against religious fundamentalism and Islamist narratives regarding blasphemy and apostasy laws and other matters, insisting on the right to criticise some aspects of religion, despite the fact that views such as hers are often labelled as unacceptable, Islamophobic or offensive, and people can even be – and are – killed for such criticism.
Sadia won the IKWRO Special Recognition: Activist of the Year 2017, and is a spokesperson for the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain.
There is no charge for this talk but please rsvp by 5 Feb, as seating is limited.
