pinkFEST 2012

Mark in your diary now June 8 – 11 pinkFEST – Don’t make any other plans!
After all, we don’t want you to miss out on the biggest, pinkest pride event in the Blue Mountains!

So, what have we got this year? Read on to find out.

Playback Theatre Fundraiser and pinkFEST Launch

This year pinkFEST will be launched at a special fundraising performance by Blue Mountains Playback Theatre on Sunday 3 June. The event will be held at Wentworth Falls School of Arts and use personal stories from the audience to create the entertainment.

Playback theatre is a form of improvised performance that began in 1975 in New York. There are usually four or five actors, a musician and an MC. The personal experiences of the audience become the source of the performance as the actors immediately play back the story with words, movement and music interpreting the story as they go along. The result is instant creative collaboration between performers and audience. Every performance is unique. Blue Mountains Playback Theatre began in 1997 and performs regularly throughout the mountains.

The theme for this special performance is Swimming in the Alphabet Soup which is a celebration of the diversity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) communities in the Blue Mountains. Stories of people from these communities will be used for the performance to explore difference, inclusion and diversity.

Film Screening – Kawa
Presented by pinkFEST and QueerScreen
Saturday 9 June at 3pm
Scenic World corner Violet Street and Cliff Drive, Katoomba

Based on the novel Nights in the Garden of Spain by Witi Ihimaera (Whale Rider), Kawa is the story of a Maori man living a double life. With his marriage a mess and work pressures raging, Kawa lives out of a hotel and spends his evenings in a sauna having anonymous sex with men. A visit from his aging father, to pass on the Kahu huruhuru (a symbolic cloak worn by the family patriarch) precipitates a coming out with consequences that resonate through all generations of one family. New Zealand looks as beautiful as ever in this spectacularly photographed, sensitively nuanced and powerful film.
